Thought you might like to see some of the really pretty sites we were able to enjoy on our river cruise. Castles, church spires, flowers and vineyards were an everyday occurence. And yes, we hiked as far as they will let you go on the Eiffel Tower. You'll see the American cemetery at Normandy, a truly sobering site. Contrast with the Hall of Mirrors at Versaille. Also Rodin's Thinker! Took lots of photos of the bakeries and street markets. Thanks Hugh, for this amazing experience!

Recently, Hugh and I embarked on a terrific adventure....Paris to Prague. Prior to our journey, Kate was visiting Utah for her "get out of the heat" annual trip. As she is such a fashionista, she helped me pack for my European adventure. It was so fun to go through the closet(s) (yes I have moved some clothing into the closets FORMERLY "owned" by my daughters. I get teased about it but I remind them who now owns those closets.) We sorted through possible candidates for the trip. Kate okayed and nixed the wardrobe and soon I had a whole list of outfits to wear. Ordinarily, I just pack a bunch of travel pants (think parachute pants) that are light weight and oh so comfortable. Kate would have none of that. I had to be coordinated every day. It was so fun to wake up every morning and know that I was going to look good! Her expertise also made it so that I actually took less clothing as many of the outfits worked together to make several different looks using the same clothes. The only problem was that most days, Hugh and I looked like we were going to totally different events every day. We're home now and back to the old wardrobe habits. I really miss looking coordinated and fashionable every day. Thanks Kate!

Newport 2011

It has been so long since I posted to this blog, I hardly know how. I'm sure no one is actually following it any longer as I haven't posted in sooooo long. But, a gathering of 41 of my closest relatives is certainly reason enough to upload some photos and describe a few experiences. My one photo goal was to snap one with all 22 grandkids in the same photos with Hugh and me. That is not an easy task with four of the new ones less than 1 1/2 years old. I told all the "big" kids I would take them to Circle K for a slurpee if they would just smile in the group photo. Bless their hearts, most of them tried hard to make it happen. And with a few head swaps via photoshop, I might even have a frame-worthy photo. Catch the photos of all the girls in green pixie outfits and the boys in football jerseys and you have PAJAMA NIGHT. The kids always look forward to the matching pajamas they receive every year. Crafts. Scripture Skits. Church. Hugh's Birthday. Then there is the Disneyland shirt. This year, all the names of the forty-one family members are written on the surfboard. We moved around in a light blue gang throughout the magic kingdom. Suffice it to say, it was Cousin Paradise, and the rest of us managed to come home with some nice memories of our own childhood days at the beach. Mostly, the adults just look forward to a good night's sleep in their own bed.

CHRISTMAS IN BETHLEHEM

I was asked to chair an event at Church recently -- Christmas in Bethlehem. Perhaps some of you have participated in this experience in your area. I had never seen it done, but was willing to give it a try. The event consists of decorating your cultural hall (aka basketball gym/court) into the town of Bethlehem. The neighborhood is invited (through a decree from Caesar Augustus) to come to Bethlehem to be counted in the census and to be taxed. They are asked to wear biblical attire. There is a tailor shop to provide costumes for those who do not obey the emperor's decree. In the city is a marketplace where they may buy supplies for their journey and as there is "no room" at the Inn, they spread out blankets to share a meal with their families. Eventually, a young couple from Nazereth joins the throng, visits the marketplace and is turned away at the Inn. The Innkeeper then shows them a place where they may rest for the night--out with the animals in a stable. The shepherds join the scene as do the wisemen. The event includes music, a fruit market, a bread market, a spice market and Delilah's Deli. There is also a storyteller's tent where the children could hear stories from the Old Testament. They could also visit Shepherd's Field where they were able to make a Bethlehem Star to take home as a remembrance of their journey. The city was guarded by Roman Soldiers (aka young men) who were charged with keeping order in the city and making sure abandoned children were reunited with their parents. They also helped collect the taxes and made sure the travelers were counted in the census. When I visited their classes to recruit soldiers, their hands shot up immediately. They all wanted to roam the streets of Bethlehem with a sword in their belt.

I had an amazing committee and as you will note from the photos, our cultural hall was completely (and I mean completely) covered with a faux ceiling created with a "jeep parachute" (aka as a "hummer parachute"). The atmosphere closely resembled a huge bedoin tent. It was amazing.

The murals were back lit with twinkly lights.

At the Spice Market, the travelers could sample crystallized ginger and smell frankincense and myrrh as well as other spices.

The honored citizens of Bethlehem...those who could not bend to sit on blankets...were given a place to sit at tables in the Senior Inn.

The biblical attire really helped to make the evening realistic. Note the twinkly lights shining through the murals.

We tried to spread "Persian" carpets all over the "city" to create the atmosphere.

Each family was asked to bring a can of food as payment of their taxes. We then donated the food to the local Food Bank.

The fruit market supplied bananas, grapes, dates and oranges. The travelers were given a small sack of the local currency (shekels) after they signed the census.

The young women helped with the Bethlehem Star craft. (Note the sample in the left corner of the tent.) The children applied glitter to their star and curly wire to hang it on their Christmas tree at home. The stars were labeled on the back with "Christmas in Bethlehem 2010"

20th Wedding Anniversary

We made it! Not that we doubted it for even a moment, but we still feel it is quite an accomplishment. Twenty years since we tied the knot in a temple of God and merged our two families into one. Can you believe it? It seems like just yesterday, but then when you think about it, we have attended five junior high graduations together, seven high school graduations, twelve college graduations, three MBA graduations, four doctorate exercises and even three pre-school graduations. With 21 grandchildren, we expect to attend many more. That gives you an idea how long 20 years is. Thanks to all our kids and family for all the suppport through the years!

We spent our first honeymoon in Maui so we decided that it was a good idea to spend our 20th there as well. We had a beautiful time. Check out the photos.

Halloween Fun

When your brothers own a craft store (Wood Connection), it is truly a blast to stop by and pick up the latest holiday crafts to create with the grandkids. This year our choices were a green-faced witch with a great cardboard hat, Frankenstein, a mummy, a pumpkin or a witch's boot. Grandma also offered squirt guns and a bucket of water for those for whom painting is not the favorite thing. And Tomiko chose to sit on her blanket and just be adorable.

Autumn in Utah

I know I repeat this every year, but Autumn in Utah is UNBELIEVABLE! I don't care where you live, you should move to Utah in the Fall. We have beautiful sunny weather (70s) and cool nights. You can walk in the morning in 50 degree weather (long sleeve tee shirt) and it still reaches 75 in the afternoon. Our summer flowers are as beautiful as ever (thank you Hugh for your hard work all summer) AND we have amazing fall colors in the mountains. Hiking is stupendous. You get up close and personal with a quaking aspen whose leaves are now bright yellow and dancing on the branches. Top it off with snow capped peaks in the high Uintahs (visible from our front yard.) Fall Break? Why would anyone go anywhere besides Utah?

We attended the Edwards Musical Review last Sunday and what a treat! Amanda played her entire violin repertoire with her mom as accompanist. Then Scott and Amanda played their piano recital pieces. Both played with skill and confidence. We are so proud. Notice how Scotty added his suit coat to his performance attire. He has quite the touch, (and not ONLY on the piano.) Ryan had extra incentive to sit quietly and listen due to the german chocolate cake waiting in the kitchen.

Blessing Day for Tomiko Kate. Lots of family in Omaha this last weekend for the Creighton graduation, so Tomi also received her name and a father's blessing in Church on Sunday. Becca made the blessing dress and as you can readily see this dress is beautiful! All the details you would find in the baby boutiques. Beaded neckline, tiny ribbons and lace on the sleeves, satin lined. Who knew you could move to Omaha for three years and come back ready for Baby Project Runway. Welcome to your turn on earth Tomi!

Jackson's DragonFly Dog

Jackson finally got his fondest wish and received a dog for his 9th birthday. Did I say "dog"? Well, I am not sure if that is accurate given the length of the tongue on this creature. If it were a favorite in its diet, Malone Jake (first dog I ever met with a middle name) could certainly catch a few flies.

Seeing Jackson with his dog sure brings back memories of when his dad got his first dog. Ty could often be found snoozing cuddled up next to HIS dog, Jake. I know the reason Jackson wanted a dog so badly is due to all the cool "Jake the dog" stories. Hey Jackson, have fun with your dog. Someday, you'll be telling your kids "Malone" stories.

Sisters, Sisters, There were never more devoted sisters.
These two recently dragged a tub full of toys from the toy room to the playset in the back yard--a total of about 2 city blocks :) Mom looked out and saw toys strewn the full way. Outside play houses are the most fun ever. I challenge their mom to post a photo of them playing in the play house.

Speaking of Tiff, she just completed a Mini-Triathalon--Swim 1/2 mile, bike 14 miles and run a 5K. Aunt Kate ran it too. Wow! I am pretty proud of these two women. Let's see some posts of the big race!

Spring is FINALLY here!

From blizzard to sunshine in less than one week. That's springtime in Utah. It was so cold and snowy we did an Easter craft instead of an Easter egg hunt. We even had Aunt Jenny in town for Easter. What Luck! But a few short days later, the flowers are pushing up through the heretofore frozen ground and Papa Hugh is out in the yard trimming and raking. He will have our yard looking gorgeous soon. Gotta love him! And I do.

Who designed this sunrise? Who designed the trees so artistically outlining the colors of the sun? As an amatuer photographer, I took these photos from the bus window. With such an incredible designer in charge, it was impossible to take a less than perfect photo. We, too, are His design.

You travel to Africa to see the animals, but isn't it really about the children. There were so many heartwarming and heartbreaking images I couldn't capture, but here are a few I treasure.

Children in the mountaintop country of Lesotho. We drove 2.5 hours on a bumpy road with hairpin turns perched on high cliffs. Climate is too cold to grow much. Almost everything is imported over the dirt road. They raise mohair sheep for export. The average salary is $10 per month. The teenagers work as shepherds. These two tried to earn a bit of money by entertaining us with this "musical instrument." Begging is frowned upon. They must do something for money from the tourists.

A favorite little girl from Shakaland. When it was time for the group dance, she came into the audience of tourists and chose me by taking my hand and walking me to the "stage."

We were lucky to see a number of lions while in Africa. I always pictured a wild lion as, well WILD! As we 4x4ed through the game parks, field glasses in hand, we searched and searched for animals. The BIG FIVE are the animals known in Africa as the five animals most difficult and dangerous to hunt. They are the Cape Buffalo, Rhino, Elephant, Leopard and Lion. Buffalo and Elephant are a dime a dozen. You see them everywhere. Rhino are a bit more difficult to spot, but we still saw plenty. When in Africa, you really want to see the CATS. Our group was lucky to see a number of lions. We found a mating pair sitting on the side of the road. They were accompanied by another female. They were just chillin' by the side of the road. One jeep in our group did see a lioness hunting which is also highly unusual. Another day we saw a large single male estimated to be about three-four years old sitting under a shade tree. These lions just sat and pretty much ignored us. There was even a herd of elephants that crossed the road right next to one of the male lions and he didn't flinch. Neither did they. I guess if you're not hungry, you get along with people. (Maybe that is a message we should take to the World Leaders.) Check out my photo of the Smiling Lion. (We never did see a leopard. Our guide indicated he sees one every 2-3 months and he is looking every day of the week.)

Check out the African version of a Pharmacy. The Pharmacists/Doctors are called Songomas. Using herbal medicine, they care for the aches and pains and sickness among the poor Africans They also tell your fortune and basically cure anything. It is a big business here as an estimated ONE million people walk through this market every day. The medicine is mostly piles of ginger root, garlic and something that looks like fertilizer.

In South Africa, the Songoma has as much respect as a medical doctor in America.

Oh, and by the way, you can buy just about anything here.

Visit to Seal Island

Do you like seals? If you do, you will love Seal Island. Seals eat a lot of fish. Fishermen don't like seals much. The seals follow the fishing boats and when the fishermen catch fish in their nets, the seals chew through the nets to eat the fish. This ruins the nets and gives the fishermen fewer fish to sell at the market.

Do you know the reason seals swim with one fin above the water? It is because they swim in very cold water. Their fin is filled with blood vessels and when they hold their fin above water, the sun warms their blood and the blood vessels take the warm blood throughout the seals body to help it keep warm.

On the second day, Grandma and Papa rode a Gondola to the Sky. We reached the top of Table Mountain in three minutes. It is called Table Mountain because it is flat on top just like a table. The view there is amazing. South Africa is hosting Soccer World Cup this year. They are building new stadiums in many of their bigger cities. Soccer teams from all over the world will play here in June.

The island in the background is Robben Island. There is a prison on this island where Nelson Mandela lived for many years. He was incarcerated for 27 years. Twenty years ago today, he was released from prison so that he could help his people obtain their FREEDOM.

One day, Grandma went to Africa to visit the penguins. Remember when we had penguin activities for a whole week? Penguins are very loving and loyal. Some of them hike for a very long time to find a place to lay their egg and then the daddy penguins tend the egg for a very long time while standing in the freezing cold.

These penguins are African Jackass Penguins because they make a noise that sounds like a donkey.

Highlights of my life

Did a Phoenix fly-by last week. With twelve of the cutest ever grandkids living there, I have to visit often.
Highlights--
One on one time with individual grandkids is a goal of mine each time I visit. I don't always get around to have this special time with each grandchild every visit, but I do my best. Check out some of the activities experienced with Grandma Kathy.

Jackson and Elias played in the All-City Basketball Championship at the US Airways Arena (Where the Phoenix Suns play). They took 2nd in the 3-4 grade category. Ty and Whit coach the team.

Ryan is into science and animals. We discussed solid, liquids and gases.
Sophia loves to dance and just pose. Ryan and Sophia take yoga at preschool.

More Mexico Pleaseeeeeee!

We just returned from a very relaxing week in Puerto Vallarta. (Yes, we are in that stage of life wherein we plan to see the world.) Friends -- Kevin and Rhonda and Brad and Melissa joined us. We had an outstanding time. Sailing, snorkeling, whale watching, boogie boarding, shell gathering (Melissa could open her own shell boutique now), dining in the nearby Mexican village of Bucerias, tennis and best of all, lounging on the chaise lounge with chips and guacamole. Did I mention it was sooooo fun? I almost feel guilty that I was so relaxed for seven whole days. Check out some of our fun photos. And yes, it is whale mating season.

We are so excited to welcome two new little princesses to our realm. Tessa Jane was born October 28th to Ty and Tiff, and Tomiko Kate was born on Christmas Day to Becca and Devin. We are so blessed to have these sweet little girls here on earth safe and sound. Yes, there was a bit of drama (Becca arrived at the hospital with a mere 11 minutes to spare before Tomi took her first breath), but all is well with both babies. Here is the photo preview.

Soccer Aunt

Hey Soccer Fans!
Imagine sitting for a couple of hours in the nice autumn sunshine watching a soccer match. Today was the big game between Skyline and Murray. As a Skyline alum, you may wonder why I wore orange and black to the game. I happen to be the Aunt of the captain of the Murray High Women's Soccer Team. That would be Rosie Gochnour. Murray just moved up to 5A this year, so playing powerhouse Skyline is a big deal. The first time they played, last month, ended in a double-overtime 0-0 tie. Today's game also went to over time, but this time Skyline scored first with the "Golden Goal" and won the game. Still it was an exciting event.
It was also their last home game so the Seniors were honored. They high-fived their teammates and were presented flowers and a necklace by their parents. Oh and by the way, it was Rosie's penalty kick that resulted in the goal that pushed the game into overtime. Watch out for state playoffs next week.

Autumn in Utah -- Nothing Better

I guess everyone has their favorite time of year. If you live in Utah, you have cold winters filled with shussing through the finest snow on earth, snowshoeing, ice skating, buidling snowmen, snowcovered mountains against crisp blue skies AND shoveling mounds of snow, icy roads, lying in bed for hours waiting for your feet to get warm.
Then there is spring. Spring is good. You are really glad to get rid of winter by then. The tulips bloom. There's Easter and Spring Break. Yet, in Utah, it is still cold, still snows occasionally and the weather is just not reliable. You get to watch the kids play soccer in the cold rain. You still can't wait to head for St. George for some really nice weather.
Next is summer. School is out. There are lots of fun things to do. Swimming, tennis, hiking, picnics, the zoo. You do have to mow the lawn weekly and pull weeds if you want a respectable front yard. Summers in Utah are also hot. There is also the issue of low humidity. That's not so much an issue as a plus. (Ask anyone from back East.) All in all, summer is better than spring and winter.
BUT, the season for which Utahns need offer no apology is FALL. Autumn is the best of all. My personal favorite. I sometimes think it was created just for me. Just right days, cool nights. It's like living in San Diego, but we also have the gorgeous leaves surrounding us in the mountains and in our own yards. No need to take a fall foliage tour anywhere but here.

On the road again. This time to Boise Idaho to watch my nephew, JJ Hyde, guide his football team to another victory. He captains the offense as QB, also plays defense and is known to kick the ball now and then as well. It was so much fun to be there with about thirty family members cheering on our Hyde athletes. McKay plays on the JV team and helps out on Varsity as well. Go JJ and KK!

Just can't let go of summer

Hugh and I took advantage of Labor Day weekend and headed for Coronado Island (just across the bay from San Diego.) This is a sweet little Hawaii wannabe. Lots of palm trees, tropical breezes, laid back little beach town. Our hotel even had flamingos hanging out in their lagoon. Lots to love here evidenced by the views above from our hotel balcony. Hugh could rollerblade to his hearts content, followed dutifully by yours truly. We walked, bladed or biked everywhere. We even kayaked part way around the island. The symphony played every night just across the bay and ended with the 1812 Overture and lots of fireworks for which we had a front-row seat. We also spent lots of time reading and relaxing. Coronado was delightful, but I will admit...it's fun to be with Hugh anywhere.

While lazing away the days on Coronado Island, we decided to visit the Naval Museum now housed on the USS Midway Aircraft Carrier now docked in the beautiful San Diego Bay/Harbor. What an interesting day.

I really felt like a big ole SALUTE as we boarded the ship.

No, this is not a sneak photo of Hugh. The Midway museum has various Naval mannequins to help visitors get the full uhhh experience.

This is the operations room where the pilots would come to hear what targets they were to drop bombs on that day. Note, every seat has an ashtray.

No, this isn't Hugh either. But it could be. With 5,000 sailors onboard, they also needed doctors, dentists and surgical suites. The captain made an effort to find calm waters when a surgery was in progress.

Dozens of airplanes and helicopters covered the flight deck. It was so interesting to learn the history and purpose of each type of aircraft. American ingenuity at its finest.

With summer drawing to a close, I decided I needed an outing with the grandkids. So the cute and cuddlies and I headed for where the wild things hang out. Wait! I have that backwards. The wild things and I went to visit the cute and cuddlies. Turns out, there has been a lot of cuddlin' going on at the Zoo. Witness the three Amur tiger cubs, the baby elephant and the baby giraffe. The tigers and elephant were not available to visit as they are still "bonding" with their mumsies, but we did see the baby giraffe. How cute is that?

There is also an amazing bird show at our Zoo. Huge falcons and the like fly so low you literally have to duck to avoid collision. No lie! Afterwards, Scott got his photo taken with the bald eagle. Those birds of prey are really majestic.
The kids had lots of fun on the carousel, the train and at the playground. Scott also twisted my arm for the BIG bag of kettle corn. He "promised" he could eat it all and after about five hours, he did.

Hugh and I started out with two plus nine. Now we are 37 with two more on the way. Six years have passed since our last group photo, and we have added 16 to the family in that time period. Our last night in Newport, we invited a photographer to capture the images of our family for posterity. We thought it would be fun to have a Grandpa and Grandma photo. Whoa....what were we thinking? What a great time we had at our annual Newport reunion. (At least we plan to make it annually.) Just a few photos to show all the fun we had...all 37 of us.
Check out Hugh on his rollerblades. He was up at dawn every morning rollerblading to Huntington Beach. We had a tug-of-war with each age group. Note the annual t-shirt worn by all to Disneyland. What could be more fun than spending the day with Hugh? --even when he gets to choose the activity. A few Saturdays ago, when we finally got a day without rain, Hugh chose to stain the deck, including all the benches, posts, hot tub and stairways. We were painting fools all day long. It was kinda fun, really. We had the boom box booming all the fun songs we like, i.e., Beatles, Beach Boys, Musicals. We had the paint brushes, rollers, and even the knee pads to keep our knees comfy. Check out the paintin' fools.

Make Way for Ducklings.
Boston has nothing on our neighborhood. Pulling out of my circle yesterday, I saw this little parage marching by. You can't tell from this photo, but there are at least ten ducklings. I couldn't get close enough to take a really good photo as I had just my phone camera and no zoom. :( But out of nowhere, this adorable little group of mallards appears. They didn't need Michael, the Policeman to help them cross the street, but how Mrs. Mallard is going to teach them everything they need to know about being ducks is beyond me. There is no pond nearby and I truly fear for them with all the dogs and cats in the neighborhood. There are a few swimming pools so mayhaps they will find one. On second thought, I wish we were in Boston. At least they'd have the Public Gardens. Oh where oh where is Mr. Mallard?

Flag Without A Stain

The first Saturday in May will find my extended family meeting at sunrise for the annual Flag Ceremony. My great grandfather homesteaded in the 1862 and was so glad to be in the land of the free, he erected a flag pole first thing. He raised the flag often, but gathered his family in a special commemoration on May 5th every year to honor his younger brother who at age 17 had drowned during a fishing expedition in the North Sea. Our family has continued this tradition and though we don't have official confirmation, I think it is the longest running private flag ceremony in the state, perhaps the country. Every May since 1862 -- By my count that's 147 times the flag has gracefully floated up the flag pole surrounded by our family.
The youngsters who arrive first get to raise the flag. My brothers used to sleep outside right next to the flag pole in honor to gain this honor. (We girls weren't allowed to sleep out on the lawn.)
At sunrise, the flag was raised to the sound of trumpets and drums. We all pledged our allegiance to the flag, sang some patriotic songs, listened to some stories of our pioneer ancestors and as a finale, wonderful donuts and sweet rolls were served along with hot chocolate, cold milk and orange juice.
Yes, the neighbors can hear the pre-dawn trumpet and drums, but believe it or not, there are those in the neighborhood who hope their kids will marry into the family so that they can come to the flag event.
I think my mom at 87 and my Aunt Elvira at 90 were the oldest attendees this year. The Schofield twins got to raise the flag. Ike accompanied the songs which included Great Grandpa's two favorites: The Flag Without a Stain and Let Us Oft Speak Kind Words to Each Other.
Thanks for the great heritage. We will try to live up!

Summer is Here!

What do I love about summer? Back in the days of kids at home, we always had good times.Swimming, tennis, hiking, beach vacations, Yellowstone, summer fieldtrips to Bingham Copper Mine (remember the absolutely HUGE tires?) pioneer museum, Liberty Park and Hogle Zoo. Don't worry, we also spent time working as my kids will attest. They always got their list for the day. The most hated job was "put things away for Mom". There was no end to that chore. What were they best at? Eric always got an early start on his chores and finished first. You could call on Whit to actually cook for the family when I had to be away at meal time. Ty was best at tending "the girls" though he knew if they came in crying, he would not get his compensation, monetarily or otherwise. Kate was great at running errands -- when she was little, she fetched things for me. When she became licensed to drive a car, she did all the errands for me -- grocery shopping, dry cleaners, pharmacy, library, post office. She even did the coupon clipping for me. That's what makes Kate a champion shopper today. (Jason, you're welcome.) One of Becca's jobs was the laundry. You want someone who really cares about what she wears and how it is laundered to be in charge of that. All in all, I will say, the kids did learn how to work. Work Hard! Play Hard! You may think I took this photo in Prague or Budapest or Gdansk. But no, this is the view my sister Natalie has from her office window. She is Chief Operating Officer of the Chamber of Commerce in our city and has much to do with the business community. (By the way, she tells me the recession is waning here. Good News!)
Isn't this an amazing photo? This is our City and County Building. Natalie has been invited several times to hike up to the top cupola, but hasn't done it yet. It isn't that she isn't fit enough. She rides her bike to work (from Murray.) It was her birthday yesterday so we took her out to lunch. We dined in a really fun Bakery/Restaurant called Gourmandie. Sisters are the best. Take care of yours.

Who is this lovely creature? Her name is Martina Stevikova. She is a long lost friend with whom I am so happy to reconnect. I met her when traveling in the Slovak Republic after Ty finished his mission She was a wonderfully stalwart member he had worked with during his mission. We visited Zilina (Martina's hometown). The best thing about Zilina, aside from meeting Martina and many of her family and friends is its proximity to the Mala Fatra mountains. There is a hiking trail there we called Janosik (Robin Hood), but I digress. (Google it for some beautiful photos.)

Eventually, Martina came to America in 1996-97 to study and found opportunities to visit us in Utah. She came for Thanksgiving and also visited us in the Spring. We had such a lovely time showing her around. I will never forget when we visited Temple Square. When she saw the temple, she practically hugged it.

We also traveled to California with her for her first trip to see the ocean and don't forget Disneyland. She loved Mickey Mouse uncommonly for a seventeen year old.
Later this very intelligent and gracious young woman finished medical school and is now an obstetrician. Way to go Martina!

Eventually, Kate traveled to Slovakia and stayed with Martina for a time. Becca and Hugh have also climbed the Janosik hike.

Facebook brought us together again. I am so happy to hear of her again and to correspond. A true friend reaches for your hand and touches your heart. ~Author Unknown

Just returned from a visit in Omaha. Who knew I would find new NBA talent in a Village Green kitchen? Not only new talent, but one who absolutely loves to see himself on the big (no) little screen. I want to say Hughie watched this little film clip 50 times (no hyperbole here.) Loved visiting with Becca and Devin. Loved spending time with Baby Papa Hugh. Loved eating Batayaki and miso soup...homemade of course. Loved seeing the penguin exhibit at the Omaha Zoo. They have their own little "March of the Penguins" going on there. They even have the male Imperial incubating the eggs. I kid you not, they do not move. (I know the photo is fuzzy, but they do have to glass in the Antarctica environment.) Really loved visiting the Winter Quarters Visitor Center and the Kanesville Tabernacle. Kanesville is the site of the sustaining of Brigham Young as the prophet of the Church. This took place three years after the martyrdom of the Prophet Joseph Smith. Brigham had already traveled to Salt Lake, pronounced "This is the Place" and then hurried back to Iowa to help out the rest of the Saints. If you ever get to Omaha, prepare to be inspired as you learn of the Mormon pioneer and all that they suffered and endured. They were amazing. Thanks Becca and Devin for such a fun time.And now---presenting the new slam dunk king!

Once upon a time there was a beautiful princess named Cinder Ella. Unfortunately, even though she was just three years old, she was coerced into chores by her family. All day long it was Cinderelly this and Cinderelly that. Picking up her toys, putting on her shoes, eating her plate clean and basically slaving away. One day, the household received an invite to the Ball at the Royal Palace. Cinder Ella wanted to go but never had time to create her gown. Voila and Bibbidy Bobbidi Boo! Fairy Grandmother Kathy to the rescue.

Who has this much fun without alcohol?

My family (ten siblings, spouses, my mom and three of her grandkids) spent New Year's week in Mexico. We had a real blast. Not only did we play tennis and hang at the beach daily, feast at the buffet, play games and lounge around to discuss everything!!!.... we also took the ferry over to Cozumel and boarded a catamarran for a snorkel sailing adventure. There were 26 of us on the boat, and about 20 others. Of course, any adventure in Mexico includes all you can drink beer and alcohol. We are all "sin alcohol" so we sipped sodas only. We had sooooo much fun dancing and singing and goofing around on the catamarran that our fellow snorkelers couldn't believe a group could have that much fun without being drunk. (Those imbibing the beer couldn't handle the marcerana on a shifting sail boat, believe me.) One of the grandsons, sixteen year old Talmage, commented later about his 50 and 60 year old aunts and uncles...."You guys are all CRAZY!" Even Mom (age 86 1/2) found herself carried ashore by a handsome dive team guy. Check out the fun.

I am working on Christmas calendars this week. I try to assemble some fun family photos taken in the past year and turn them into a colorful calendar to distribute to each of our nine children. It's a fun tradition as they have a different photo of a family member hanging on the wall all year round. The tough part is choosing the photos. What do you think? Should I use any of these?

Everyday at 3:45, Nelson rings my doorbell for some Hooked on Phonics drills. (How many ten year olds, voluntarily give up their play time to learn how to read in a new language?) No one makes him come. He just has an innate desire to achieve. After 45 minutes of word drills, we go out to the gym for another kind of drill. I figure any ten year old needs a basketball vocabulary just as much as the "I can chat, I can chop" stuff. So far we have practiced shots, steals, passes, dribbling and rebounds. He literally giggles when we play "steal the ball" from each other. We usually end up with a game of HORSE. He is actually a pretty darn good shot. We then go inside and write and then read a story about our games. Who knows? You could be looking at the first NBA player from Birundi. Fun times!

A dog's window on the world

Pretty cute story. Patches is an Australian Shepherd who lives next door to Emily's parents. They have a long-time relationship with Patches. Every day, when they returned home, they slipped a dog biscuit treat through the picket fence to Patches. In return, Patches offered them adoring friendship as only a dog can do and even barked once in awhile to warn them of possible intruders in the neighborhood. Boy, did they have the best of both worlds. Man's best friend for the small price of a bag of dog biscuits. (And no doggie doo doo clean-up duty.) Problem: the fence blew down and the neighbors put up a new one...except this one wasn't picket. Emily's parents missed Patches so much, they convinced the neighbors to build a window in the fence, so the doggie friendhip could continue. Now Chance is the one reaching through the fence with a dog biscuit.

Just returned home from a Houston flyby to visit Chance, Dirk and Emily. New words are rolling off Chance's tongue everyday and this weekend it was Kakee. (All the grandkids call me Grandma Kathy and this is Chance's version.) It is so so fun when a little, almost two-year old decides that you are important in his life and gives you hugs and calls you "Kakee".

If you know me, you know I love to dress up. Halloween is such a fun holiday. There is little stress involved (as opposed to Thanksgiving and Christmas.) The traditions are not as steep; it doesn't have to be perfection. It also works that we have a pretty well-stocked costume closet. We just save stuff. Cheerleading outfits from Oly High, Football jersey, graduation gowns--just stuff. Sometimes we even buy something that we might need someday for Halloween. That's how I got the ruby slippers. I've owned them for a dozen years but never worn them. And years ago I bought a blue checked jumper from Talbot's but always felt like the farmer's daughter when I wore it, so it ended up in the costume closet. But this year, those items emerged from the closet and I became Dorothy. The trick or treaters love it when adults dress up. I could hear them through the front door..."Oh look, she's Dorothy." One asked me, "Where's Toto?" And of course, he was right there in his basket.
I'm not the only one in the family that loves Halloween. Believe it or not, Nacho Libre is a big favorite with Whit and Ty. And Hugh always finds a way to scare the bajeezus out of the neighborhood kids. Of course, Dorothy did need a wizard to get back to Kansas.

Scare Crow Festival

Salt Lake City has the annual Christmas tree festival, Portland has the Rose Festival, even Nebraska is likely to have a Corn Festival, but Mahone, Nova Scotia celebrates Scare Crows. Check out the photos we took last week while cruising New England and Canada. Watch for Alice in Wonderland and note the scare crows representing the presidential candidates.

The last photo shows a picturesque little town chosen as a UNESCO site. The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) seeks to encourage the identification, protection and preservation of cultural and natural heritage around the world considered to be of outstanding value to humanity. This town, Lunenberg, also in Nova Scotia, is the best surviving example of a planned British colonial settlement in North America.

Jeneseri for President! (Of the Olympus Junior High Eighth Grade) I am proud to announce the inauguration of the new president of the 8th grade. Something tells me, Jeneseri has figured out how to get along in his new country. He decided to sign up for the election, found a friend to help him with posters, (whose father happens to own an Alphagraphics) and went out there and won the election. McCain and Obama -- eat your hearts out.
And, while he was in the mood for signing up for stuff, he decided to try out for the track team. Turns out, he is a pretty good runner. Yesterday at the track meet, he took 11th overall in the district cross country event. Congratulations Jeneseri.

I did a Phoenix flyby this week. Arrived Wednesday, home Saturday. Had lots of fun with the grandkids -- tennis, biking and of course the pancake breakfast. (Danny calls me the pancake grandma.) Also, helped Kate pick out a stroller for Jr. Winsor. And what did Hugh do while I was gone? Well aside from the usual pastime of stamping out pain and suffering at the hospital, he mowed, edged and trimmed the yard, cleaned the garage, delivered Stuff to the DI, bought groceries at Costco AND defrosted and cleaned the freezer AND organized the food storage room. Whew! I bet it wears you all out just thinking about being married to this man. All I can say is, I am darn lucky!

Tonight, I shared a Family Home Evening (FHE) with Ty and Tiffany's family. Ty played the guitar while the children sang and danced. We learned about how special it is that we are all children of God and how much Heavenly Father loves each one of us. At the end, FHE awards were presented. These awards consisted of especially creative and individualized certificates for each child. Davis received the Bravery award for his courage in getting stitches in his scalp (on top of the kitchen table.) Ella received the Sharing award as she was cited for sharing her chicken nuggets without even being coerced. Jackson received the Intiative award for doing something for someone else without being asked. (He provided Ella with dipping sauce.) I found out later the most prestigious award ever is the HUP award. It isn't given every week, just on very special occasion to a very deserving person. What does HUP stand for you ask? Honesty Under Pressure. Indeed, a high honor. Think about introducing this important award at your FHE.

New vocab word today. Hot Tub. As today's high was in the 60s for the first time in three months, it seemed like a good day to open up the hot tub. The Bashire children were quite grateful for a place to warm up after their time in the swimming pool. I reminded them that the hot tub is for soaking and relaxing and they remembered most of the time. I asked them to pose so as to show off their muscles.

All Summer Long

All summer long I have coaxed Jeneseri to jump off the diving board. Usually a pretty outgoing and fearless kid, he absolutely refused to do it. He was really afraid of dying. I always promised to save him if he did, but he still wouldn't do it. But TODAY, he did it! Of course, I had to get Hugh to stand in readiness to rescue him, so that I could take the photo, but he DID it. I am so proud. He has gone from not swimming a stroke, to jumping off the diving board and swimming the length of the pool in less than sixty days, with really nothing more than encouragement and very simple swimming "lessons" from me. After the first jump, he immediately climbed back on the diving board for a "dive" into the pool. It is amazing what kids can learn just by watching TV (see the Olympics post two weeks ago.)

I'm not sure if alligators in the water are a big problem in Birundi, all I know is Stela isn't taking any chances. Even though she has splashed in our swimming pool a good part of the summer, she often straps on not one, but three life jackets (just in case.) After she has them securely fastened she will dive in and boy, let me tell you, she is buoyant! She pops up out of the water, barely getting wet. The cutest scene of all is when this little seven year old, three deep in life preservers, acts as the chief lifeguard for her three-year old sister, Aline. She is continually watching to make sure Aline doesn't float too far away from the stairs. Aline, surprisingly, is content with just one life jacket. But then she has Stela to keep her safe.

Meet Scotty David Edwards. Scotty is the roughest, toughest grandson ever. Take his teeth for instance. Yes, he has lost a few as most kids do. But Scotty never lets his baby teeth get sorta loose and then by wigglin' and wigglin' for a week or so, the tooth eventually, hanging by a thread, falls out or is gently nudged by dad or mom. NO! Scotty's teeth only and always leave his mouth with a modicum of violence when his mouth collides with one or the other of his siblings' heads. In addition to this rough and tumble individuality, Scotty is also a lot of fun. When he visits, we play basketball and tennis in the gym. He is highly motivated in tennis right now because Grandma can still "smoke" him, and he does so want to win. I am very much aware that my prowess will be short-lived as this grandson is no stranger to extreme competition. Grandma loves you, Scotty.

First Ever Birundian Olympic Swim Team

Invited my African friends over for a swim. We invite them over several times per week to cool off in the pool. They usually beg for life jackets and goggles. I strap the life jackets on the 3 and 6 year old, but encourage the others to practice actual swimming. It wasn't until the Olympics started that they really got interested in swimming. Now, Jeneseri (12) and Nelson (8) swim all over the pool. Friday, we learned the backstroke and the butterfly. They also now love to practice trick "dives" just like in the Olympics. We visited the ten grandchildren in Phoenix last week and found ourselves with a very hot afternoon with nothing to do. Big surprise in Arizona! FYI for moms or grandmothers in the same situation. Rush right over to Sam's Club and buy the paper airplane book. Contained therein are specialty papers with the fold lines imprinted and there are detailed directions to go with. We folded and practiced piloting and then we had the Olympics of Paper Airplanes. What fun we had gliding and crash bombing them across the room and down the hall. We even had an around the "world" event. Congratulations to EJ, Jackson, Davis and Brooke. Perhaps we have some future pilots aboard.

We have another three year old in the family. Ella just celebrated her birthday on August 15th. Move over ToysRUs as we have found the Costume Closet a great place to shop for birthday presents. All of our grandkids love to dress up and Ella is no exception. She even had a Sleeping Beauty castle cake for her birthday party. (See link to Ty and Tiff's blog.) Those of you who know Devin well, know that he is a gigantic food afficionado. He is known for his very enthusiastic MMMMMMMmmmmm when he is served (practically any kind of) food. And so the perfect toy for Baby Hugh is our container of (fake) food. As he is Devin's offspring, he gobbles down most anything and even gives it the MMMMMmmmm approval rating.

Snowbird in Summer

Whit and Laura plus the four kids visited last month. We spent an evening in the canyon, riding the tram at Snowbird and loving the beauty of our Utah mountains. We saw a number of deer as we rode the tram. Our time at the summit was cut short as a thunderstorm was rolling in. You do not want to be on an 11,000 foot peak when lightning is afoot. Note little Ty is now on solid foods. He thinks Papa Hugh's backpack is especially tasty. Whit, of course, has summitted much higher peaks. His climb in Africa of Mount Kilimanjaro was a 19,000 foot "hike." Whit will also climb Mount Owens (Grand Tetons) on Labor Day weekend. He has a group of friends from all over the country that climb with him each September. Whit and Laura have moved an incredible 12 times in 12 years of marriage so they have friends everywhere.

Oh me oh my! I started scrapbooking!

Yes, I did it. I started scrapbooking digitally. It is pretty fun and so easy. About 8 years ago, I thought I would be such a great grandma and make some scrapbook pages for my grandkids. Well, we all know how that turned out. The first four grandkids got a couple of pages just because Kate needed a summer job and helped me out. The other 12 grandkids, zilch! Just recently, Becca got into the memory maker stuff and also taught me a few of her tricks. I found it fun to place a grandchild on your lap and let him help you create the page. The photo posted here is an example. Davis picked his own photos, paper, font and mat. Well, okay, I added a few things too. I think it looks out of the galaxy cute.

Ever Caught a Fish with Your Bare Hands?

You've met Jeneseri before. My 13 year old friend from Africa. He is in our local scout troop and is the smallest scout by at least a foot. Jeneseri went backpacking with the scouts last week. He loved it. The Scoutmaster said he was like a mountain goat carrying his giant pack up the mountain with no problems. Apparently he loves trout. He ate 3 for dinner the first day and 8 for lunch the next day. He didn't want anyone to throw the fish back because he wanted to eat them all. One of the biggest fish caught was by Jeneseri but unfortunately he had to put it back because he caught it with his bare hands.

Birundi Ballerina

Many of my readers may recall I am helping to mentor a refugee family from Birundi. Meet Stella who is seven years old. She is taking ballet lessons at our home this summer. A young woman in the neighborhood is earning money for a trip to China by teaching ballet to some little girls and she scholarshipped Stella. I love it each morning when Stella knocks on the door dressed in her leotard and tutu. How changed her life is now. From searching for and hauling firewood (on her head) for cooking daily meals to plie and pirouettes. We love you Stella.

Sweet Sixteen at Newport Beach

We had a great reunion at Newport Beach last week. The sixteen grandchildren were all there as well as the moms and dads. We are 35 total now. We spent most of the time on the sand and in the water with one outing to Disneyland. Jason was our Disneyland coordinator arranging for all the FastPass tickets and organizing all of us to get to go on all the rides. The meals were amazing. No, we didn't brave 16 grandkids at a restaurant...realizing that they are all under the age of nine. Nearly, half of them are under the age of two. Each meal was chaired by two couples and we ate like kings. It worked great because after the kids finished eating, they just went out to the sand to continue their baseball game, football game or sand digging activity. Thanks everyone for all you contributed to make this year a rowsing success.

Halloween in June

I don't know why but my grandkids seem to love to dress up and pretend to be someone else. (I don't know where they get the drama penchant.) Note the latest photos of Anakin Skywalker (alias Davis Church), Pink Princess (Ella Church) and Baloo from Jungle Book in case you don't keep up on Disney movies (Ryan Church). PS, they don't just wear these costumes for the photo session. They wear them non-stop. Eric and Donna have the Baloo costume hanging on their bedpost so it is always handy. Imagine waking up in the middle of the night and seeing that face at the end of the bed.

Endangered Species Carousel

If you are ever in Phoenix, drop by the zoo and ride the carousel. You won't find a horse on it (except for the seahorse.) We spent a fun weekend in Phoenix over Memorial Weekend. One of the highlights was Uncle Whit giving each of the kids a wild ride in his kayak. He then strapped on his gear and did some kayak rolls for us.

Commando Couple

Hugh and I went a little wild on a visit to Mexico recently. We did a Cabo Adventure which included 10 zip lines, rappeling a 100 foot drop off, rock climbing up a 100 foot wall and crossing a wire across a ravine, better known as the Commando Bridge. Hugh, who is deathly afraid of heights, was a good sport and went along with his somewhat crazy wife. We survived and feel a great sense of "We can do anything" now!
PS. I am smiling on the Commando Bridge, but only because the paparazzi called to me for the photo. I am really scared spitless on that bridge.

Can't even believe how much fun it was tonight to attend a beautiful event at the Grand America Hotel honoring none other than my youngest sister, # eleven in the Egan Clan, Natalie. She was chosen as the 2008 Woman of the Year by Wasatch Woman magazine. (She is the Cover Girl on this month's edition.) A bunch of us attended the banquet (the ballroom was completely packed) and shed a few tears of joy as our sister was honored for her many and varied accomplishments. Natalie gave a short speech encouraging women to project their innate "feminine" values and implant them into their community. Compassion, fairness, civility, stewardship, beauty, relationships, service and goodness to name a few. Combining with the masculine virtues of efficiency, competency, power, competition and strength for the good of everyone. She was quick to point out that one person can easily possess both feminine and masculine virtues, but that they are usually more pronounced in the gender they most closely represent. She complemented Merritt and Marcia (my mom and dad) for raising their children in a way that can only be described as "wise stewardship of a family of unimaginable scale with a magical outcome."
The greatest quote from her speech came at the very end. With a tone of emotional admiration for his strength and goodness, Natalie said, "If you want to see greatness, just look into my husband's eys."
Congratulations Natalie. We are bursting with pride!

GirlFriends' Weekend in NYC

March 6-9, Jill, Dana, Kate and I traveled to New York City to hang out with Jenny who is working as a consultant in the Big Apple for a few months. We had a great time touring around together. From the Brooklyn Bridge to Broadway, FAO Schwarz, The Met Museum of Art, Strawberry Fields (forever), Ground Zero, Chinatown, Carnegie Deli, Church at Lincoln Center (underneath the Manhattan Temple), great food and fun shopping, giggling till late. Need I say more? Next year, we hope more of the sisters can join us.

We celebrated President's Day by inviting our African friends to their first dinner and a movie. Of course, they had no idea what they were in for, but as they are very trusting they piled into our suburban, and we headed off for fun. First stop, Wendy's. They are very conversant with the English words hamburger, french fries and coca cola. They also now know the word Frosty. Then we went to the Waterhorse movie. Fortunately, it has a lot of action and visual emotion as I am certain they did not understand very much of the dialogue. They were very well behaved the entire time. Do you remember your first movie? Hugh says his first movie experience was the Disney zippity do dah, "Uncle Remus" officially, "The Song of the South" and I remember seeing a movie on Thanksgiving evening starring Jennifer Jones, "Good Morning Miss Dove." I was 7 years old and I threw up in the bathroom at the theater. Please comment with your first movie memory.

The Amazing Gift Basket

Check out this Thank You gift basket given to us by Brad and Melissa Thompson. Talk about creative! It touches on so many of the fun things we did in Kauai. Note the beautiful flowers, the beach towel, the fresh pineapple, the colorful fish pinata (Melissa was a snorkeling fiend), the Kilauea lighthouse, and of course, who could forget the chickens? Also, look closely and you will see several fun scrapbook pages highlighting our helicopter ride around and over the island and our hike to the nualolo cliffs. Thanks Brad and Melissa. Caught One at Last

We recently spent some time on the island of Kauai with our friends, Brad and Melissa Thompson. Even though the state bird is officially the Nene, a special Hawaiian goose, the unofficial bird is the Chicken. They are everywhere. Melissa entertained us royally by trying daily to catch one. As you can see, she succeeded.

100 Years of Utah Basketball

We had a fun experience on Saturday afternoon. We attended the U of U basketball game with Ty and Tiff's family. The event was not just a basketball contest between Utah and San Diego, it was the event commemorating 100 years of basketball at the UofU. Everyone who had played at Utah in the past 100 years was invited to a special luncheon and honored at half-time. Ty was one of those invited to participate. They also honored the Sweet Sixteen Century Team which included several players with whom Ty had played in various capacities. Note: Keith Van Horn, Andre Miller, Alex Jensen and Michael Doleac to name a few. Tom Chambers and Danny Vranes were also on the Sweet Sixteen team, as was Jeff Judkins. Ty had a great time hanging out with the other "gym rats" he has known through the years. They were all very cordial to him. They named each player by name and then gave out U of U jerseys to the sixteen players on the special Century team. Way to go, Ty! It is an honor just to be on the floor with all those who enjoy basketball as much as you do.
